SULLIVAN • A 44-year-old man fired a handgun at the side of the Sullivan police station and then shot himself in the torso on Wednesday evening, police said. The man later died at a hospital of his wounds.
Jeff Hamblin, 44, of Sullivan drove his motorcycle to the police station at about 6 p.m., police said. He parked, dismounted after a few minutes and walked toward the front door of the police station, firing a shot at the side of the building before turning the gun on himself.
Police inside the building responded immediately, and along with Missouri Baptist Hospital medics and the Sullivan Fire Protection District provided medical attention and later transported Hamblin to a hospital.
Sullivan is a town of about 7,000 that straddles the border of Franklin and Crawford counties.
